PBN Setup Checklist: Domains, DNS, WordPress and Maintenance

How to use this checklist

Run stages one and two before any money moves, and never start stage three on a domain that failed stage one. Print one copy per property, or keep it open next to your tracker — the boxes below are real checkboxes and the print button uses your browser's print dialog only. The six-stage setup checklist

Six stages, one property at a time. Nothing is stored — ticking boxes is local to your browser session.

Stage 1 — Domain due diligence

Review historical use in archive snapshots across several years
Check ownership records and any trademark or brand conflict
Check current indexation state and any manual-action signals
Assess backlink relevance and obvious manipulation in the profile
Identify prior redirects and where the domain previously pointed
Record the verdict and evidence before purchase

Stage 2 — Hosting and DNS planning

Select the hosting model against your CMS and control requirements
Decide nameserver assignment and document the convention
Plan A/CNAME records and TTLs before pointing the domain
Provision SSL and confirm renewal is automatic
Decide whether the domain needs mail, and configure MX and SPF accordingly
Assign backup ownership explicitly: platform, provider or you
Store credentials in a shared password manager, not a spreadsheet

Stage 3 — CMS deployment

Install WordPress and remove default content and sample users
Create the minimum set of user roles; no shared administrator logins
Choose theme and plugins deliberately and keep the plugin count low
Harden logins, disable file editing, and restrict admin access
Assign update ownership: automatic platform updates or a named person
Document the recovery process for this specific install

Stage 4 — Content and information architecture

Write a one-line purpose for the site that a reader would accept
Build a topic map with primary and supporting subjects
Publish the essential pages: about, contact, policy pages
Set an editorial standard for length, sourcing and authorship
Plan internal linking within the site before any outbound link
Confirm media licensing and attribution for every image used

Stage 5 — Quality assurance

Verify crawlability and that robots directives match intent
Confirm canonical tags are self-referencing on every template
Check HTTPS everywhere and that redirects resolve in one hop
Fix broken links and missing media
Test mobile rendering on a real device viewport
Record a performance baseline for later comparison
Restore the site from backup into a staging context and confirm it works

Stage 6 — Ongoing operations

Set the update cadence and verify updates actually ran
Enable uptime monitoring with alerting to a monitored inbox
Validate backups on a schedule, not only after incidents
Track domain expiry and renewal for every property
Review content quarterly and refresh what has aged
Keep an incident log with dates, cause and resolution
