Blog Networks: Four Models That Get Confused
The term covers several very different structures with different risk profiles. Separating them makes the operational and search-policy consequences obvious.

Private blog network
Independently hosted sites under common control, used to place links toward a target property. Ownership is deliberately not disclosed. This is the model with direct search-policy exposure, and the one our private blog network guide covers in depth.
Public multi-site publishing network
A publisher operating several branded properties openly — a media group with distinct titles, for example. Common ownership is public, editorial independence is claimed, and links between properties are typically editorial. Nothing about the structure is inherently manipulative.
Managed WordPress portfolio
An operational arrangement rather than a link strategy: many WordPress sites administered through one platform for provisioning, updates, and backups. Agencies run these for clients constantly. The structure is neutral; intent determines everything.
Hosted blogging platforms
Free subdomain properties on large publishing platforms. Cheap and fast, with no infrastructure control, no ownership of the domain, and heavily discounted link value. Occasionally useful, rarely a network foundation.
Which model does your project actually need?
If the goal is centralized administration of many WordPress sites, a managed platform solves it directly. If the goal is link placement under undisclosed common control, you are in private-blog-network territory, with the search-policy implications that carries.
